“Medecins Sans Frontieres in Yemen’s civil war”

The cost of wheat has doubled during Yemen’s civil war. Why is food so expensive in one of the world’s most deprived countries?

Nearly 50,000 people in Yemen are already suffering from famine and 16 million are food insecure. The country has been at war since 2015 and aid agencies are struggling to find enough donor funds to prevent widespread famine. A big part of the problem is transportation costs, reports Teresa Welsh.

Yemen imports 90% of its food and transportation costs account for 50% of food prices. Job losses and wage cuts make it unaffordable for many.

Regulations requiring cargo shipments to be inspected in another country before arrival, plus war insurance risk premiums, can make it 16 times more expensive to ship to Yemen than in neighboring Oman.

Teresa spoke with Auke Lootsma of UNDP Yemen, who described efforts underway to improve the country’s ports to help lower costs and thus reduce high food prices.
